Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.~Judd Blaise

Flash Gordon isn't for everyone, but it is a good movie set in 1980.the music score is what makes the movie really good because new score is all done by Queen. What makes the steelbook really good as it's the 40th anniversary of the movie itself. Anybody knows the story behind Flash Gordon knows the story itself. Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Doctor Zarcough have to find a way to stop Earth's destruction. Not knowing that Ming the Merciless is behind everything and Earth's destruction. Having the 40th anniversary edition come out on steelbook is worth every penny.
I don’t know if the younger crowd would enjoy this because it’s dated and kind of Corny but for some reason I always loved this movie and Glad I got it in a Steelbook now. They were not trying to make a Super special effect movie even for the time period. If you think of it as a comic book made to movie keeping the comic book aspect it’s a great Flash Gordon movie.
Absolutely 1980s cinematic gold.
The cheesiness just adds to how awesome it is. I saw this as an 8 year old at the drive in, with Empire Strikes Back...and my mom bought the soundtrack the next day. My brother and I would play the record constantly and act out the movie in the living room. The movie STILL holds up all these years later. My own kids love it as much as I do. Nice looking Steelbook as well.
I had really been wanting to see this again, before watching the documentary on Sam Jones. Luckily this steelbook version came out at an affordable price. After using some reward certificates, how could I resist. The quality is excellent, and it even comes with the original first episode of the Flash Gordon serial from the 30's. Highly recommended!
Flash Gordon is one of those Guilty Pleasure movies. A cast of unknowns as well as some huge International stars. Cheesey, fun and loads of entertainment. Plus in the Steel Box Edition it is a great addition to your collection. This is a must own Sci-fi movie. Go Flash Go!
" A MUST HAVE! " for your steelbook collections!
But thank God bestbuy packaged this and some other order in a box and not in the plastic envelope mailers, thats why i dont need to return this coz it's not damaged this time..
OK, I'm older, but this movie is a classic...!!! I really wish they would have made a trilogy or something,,,,, Yeah, it is somewhat Cheesy looking back, but I always love the cinematography and of course the soundtrack....!!!!
