Flash Gordon
Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

    The Worst Movie Ever Made!

Taking into account the film's lucrative budget (estimated to have been around $35 million), and the accomplished cast and crew for the most part, this 1980 version of 'Flash Gordon,' based off the 1930's adventure serial, gets the award for the 'Worst Movie Ever Made' in my opinion. Now, that's not saying I haven't seen worse films, because I have, but when you consider the resources 'Flash' had at its disposal, it's utterly unbelievable that such a poor product could result. Highlighting this somewhat intentionally 'cheesy' piece, is its lavish production and set design, followed by the much appreciated musical score from rock band 'Queen.' Just about everything else in regards to this film is just plain bad, but so bad it's actually a riot to watch! This 'Flash Gordon: Saviour of the Universe' dvd features an excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, with some sparse extras. Highly recommended to the fans of this movie, which completely deserves its 5-star rating as the best 'worst' movie I've ever seen!

    Best Movie Ever

I really like this movie a lot. I'm pretty sure that this movie came out in 1980. Sam J Jones was the perfect choice for Flash Gordon, I love the part where he says "Well, I guess I'll be running along now." I pushed the rewind button many times for that part, it's hilarious. The reason why I find that part to be so funny is because when he says that he gets out of the spaceship and very convincingly acts as though he's going to leave the girl with this crazy mad scientist, who plans on going out in to outer space in a spaceship that he made. I really thought that Flash was going to leave her there and then it's funny when he says "You lunatic!" I laughed again, it was just to great. I also liked how that one hawk man said "Who wants to live forever" which is a song by Queen. I really like this movie and so will you, so you should definitely buy it.

    Flash AHHHH!

Flash Gordon is one of the best Sci-fi films to be released in the early 1980s. Trying to compete with the Star Wars and Star Trek films of the time, the film does a very decent job when it comes to visual effects, set design, and Sam Jones plays a believable hero as Jets Quarterback and savior of the universe against Ming the Merciless and his fashion lackies. Other outstanding performances include Melody Anderson as Dale, Max Von Sydow as Ming, Timothy "007" Dalton as Prince Baron, Topal as Dr. Zarkov, and Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan (looking more like Pavoratti than ruler of the Hawkmen.) An outstanding film with a musical score conducted by legendary rock band Queen. Check it out!

This movie is so bad it's good. Not many movies are like that, but this one is definitely at the top of my list for that sort of thing. I had it on DVD, but I wanted to experience the sheer magnitude of it's so bad goodness that when Best Buy had it for ten dollars I snatched it. There's no special editions as far as I'm aware, but I'm sure at some point there will be. This also came with movie money which I used to see Ted 2 for free, so basically it was as if I bought this for five dollars - a steal. I love Queen, so naturally I also own the soundtrack. Overall, this movie is just one of those silly movies that you could just watch anytime you need a pick-me-up.

this is a great film. 80's nostalgia in crisp quality and sound. The story is full, has great action, romance, drama, and tragedy. It is a space opera. Laced with a soundtrack from Queen I don't see how anyone could deny this. The special features are great too. I loved the one where you see the serial of the original Flash gordon series from the early 1900's. I wish they put all 13 parts to that series with the blu ray, not sure why they didn't but that would have been awesome.

Flash Gordon - Ultimate 80's Cheese

OK, so you're not going to buy this because you're looking for great action or an unpredictable plot but, it is a fun movie. I remember watching this as a kid and being enthralled by the premise without even knowing that it was more or less a remake of the 1930's series. It's a fun movie with a soundtrack bolstered by Queen. If you're a product of the late '70s or early 80's this will bring you back to your childhood. Don't be embarrased, just buy it.

    Just What I expected

Was Weary that I was getting the original FLASH movie with prices on e-bay up to $80.00 or more. If you are a FLASH collector or just a fan of the movie, Best Buy guarantees this is the real thing. Very satisfied and formatted for US players(some Vids on e-bay warn that they are not formatted for US players, or are in portuguese with English subtitles). Will probably order another and put it away as backup. Thanks BestBuy

"Dated" and "kitchy", but still fun.

This ISN'T the Flash Gordon of the old Buster Crabbe Serials, but rather a product of it's time (1980 - think TV's "Buck Rogers" and the original "battlestar Gallactica"). Director Dino De Laurentis was making a (then stylish) "homage" to the original. It's now "dated" and "kitchy", but LOTS of fun (and the sountrack by the band "Queen" is STILL a marvel). Well worth a watch.
