Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.~Judd Blaise

Flash Gordon [Saviour of the Universe Edition] [DVD]
This review is about the steelbook, not the movie. If you cared nothing for the movie you wouldn't be reading this, right?
A while back, I bought the DVD Special Edition with largely lackluster extras, so I saw no reason to buy the BluRay which had the same DVD extras and nothing more.
Then this steelbook tipped me over. Yes, it's just the same old BluRay in a nicer steelbook package. Yes, I'm a fan. Shut-up.
Later on I bought the Arrow limited release of the 4K which has all of the extras Universal Pictures should have gave us in the first place.
If you have a 4K player or TV I'd buy the Arrow version, you'll love it. If you plan on holding onto your BluRay player for the foeseeable future, you still have the DVD (or no disc at all) and you don't care much about extras, go ahead and get this one.
An absolute Sci-Fi classic, transferred into the land of 4K! You can never go wrong with Arrow Video! They do the best quality transfers of the cult classic you love!
This is no different! Great price via Best Buy too! A can’t miss! FLASH!
This is 35mm film to 4K. Is there noticeable film grain? Of course. Does it look better or sound better than Blu-Ray? Not that I can see or hear.
What makes this all worth it? All of the extras that Universal Pictures should have always included but never did.
Arrow finally gives the fans of Flash Gordon movie the respect it was always due.
At this price Arrow should have included a Blu-Ray, but this is single disc.
I love this movie. I've owned just about every version and format of it. This one is the ultimate. The picture is just perfect. Eye-popping gorgeous transfer, I think my mind was truly blown when the space ship went into the cloud and they started electrifying it. My Sony A8 OLED adores presenting this movie. If you're even looking at this review, stop, and just click buy now. You will not be disappointed.
I was very happy to hear that Flash Gordon would be released in 4K by Arrow and really appreciate the effort. The 4K visuals with Dolby Vision really bring out the color palette of this movie. I won't comment on the actual movie because you're going to get it if you've seen it and liked it. I only deducted one star since it missed the chance for upgraded Dolby Atmos or DTS-X audio which would have really taken it to the next level. The DTS-HD soundtrack is adequate but just could have been better.
