Synopsis

Fletch
Chevy Chase added a classic comic hero to the film landscape with Fletch, one of his few truly popular star vehicles in a famously misguided post-Saturday Night Live career. Chase plays Irwin M. Fletcher, known to everyone as Fletch, a Los Angeles Lakers-loving investigative reporter with a gleeful disdain for deadlines and a knack for pushing the buttons of his frustrated editor (Richard Libertini). He's also known for donning numerous disguises and assuming zany false identities to help gain information. While pursuing an ongoing story about a powerful drug dealer who operates from Venice Beach, he comes across an intriguing offshoot in which he becomes intimately involved. Aviation executive Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) has an unusual proposition for Fletch: If Fletch agrees to an elaborate plan to kill him, for reasons Stanwyk refuses to divulge beyond explaining that he has bone cancer, Fletch will walk away with a healthy sum of money and a plane ticket to Brazil. Curious yet suspicious by profession, Fletch begins investigating Stanwyk's true motives, which leads him through numerous misadventures. Among them are a visit to a stuffy country club; a high-speed car chase with an unwitting passenger; repeat encounters with Stanwyk's wife (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson), although she may not be his only one; and a trip to Provo -- that's Utah, not Spain. Inspired by a novel of the same name by Gregory McDonald, Fletch went from thriller to comedy as it was adapted into a vehicle for Chase. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

Chevy Chase is perfectly cast as Irwin Fletcher, a wise cracking newspaper reporter working undercover on a beach to expose a drug running operation. As he looks into the local drug traffic, only to get caught up in insurance fraud, police corruption, embezzlement and another man's suit. At the same time, he is mistaken for a junkie by shady millionare Alan Stanwyk (Tim Matheson) who asks Fletch to murder him. Fletch agrees but launches an investigation into finding out why this man wants to be killed. This isn't lowbrow humor, it's quick witted and very fast. This is one of Chevy Chase's finest performances!

Just watching Chevy Chase in his various disguises, spouting his various pseudonyms is funny enough. FLETCH embodies an era of comedy that is all-but over. Although it often feels like Fletch is winking to the camera throughout, he doesn't really cross that line. A funny story that doesn't utterly depend on whether or not you can catch a bunch of pop culture references.

This classic, if that can be said of a film shot in the 1985, is a hilarious look into the life of investigative reporter Irwin Fletcher or Fletch as he prefers to be called. The story involves drug dealing, murder for hire, crooked cops, romance and a huge amount of laughs along the way.

Call him Ted Nugent, Igor Stravinsky, Dr. Rosen, Freida's boss, Mr. Babar, John Coktosin, Mr. P**n, or just Fletch F. Fletch. One of the funniest, most quotable movies since "Airplane". Buy this movie, while you're at it, pick up the Beatles White Album. Put it on the Underhill's tab.

Fletch is a pretty funny mystery comedy with Chevy Chase. The role of a private detective suits him perfectly, giving him a chance to create multiple eccentric comic characters while trying to find out why a man hires Chase to kill him. Looking forward to watching it again soon.

I'm not kidding. This is a classic comedy. The price on blu-ray is amazingly low. If you haven't seen Fletch you're missing out on one of Chevy Chase's masterpieces (Spies Like Us is another, but that's for another review). The second movie in the series is also worth a look.

Chevy Chase is an investigative reporter who latches on to the curious case of a wealthy, successful man who wants to be killed. I think this is Chevy's best movie, tailored to his comedic skills, and is still very funny several decades after I first saw it.
