Civil War epic with great literary pedigree
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, a solid Civil War historical epic solidly grounded in The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The film tracks on a handful of major players to dramatize the July 1863 battle between the armies of the Union and Confederacy in Gettysburg, a small Pennsylvania farm town. Martin Sheen stars as General Robert E. Lee, Tom Berenger as General James Longstreet, and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a college professor whose unorthodox techniques save the day for the Union. The film is over 2 hours and 30 minutes. History and Civil War buffs should enjoy it. A nagging problem is that Civil War reenactors participated as extras, which in one respect is a nice touch. But, even knowing the composition of the Civil War armies, wears as you watch middle-aged and old overweight men in clean uniforms portray soldiers who had been fighting and marching for years.

Historically Accurate Depiction
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you are a history buff, you will probably enjoy the movie. I did. I have viewed it several times. I. It focuses on both sides of this major battle of the Civil War and the depictions seem fairly accurate. It is long, 3 hours or so. But the battle did last 3 days. It does a good job of pointing out how the officers on both sides had known, liked, and respected each other before the war. I couldn't help but be saddened by the needless loss of life this war created. It happened because people on both sides stopped listening to each other and trying to resolve differences.

Very good; educational as well.
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very good movie. 4 1/2 hours long.. 2 sittings might be best to watch it. The battle scenes are best experienced with surround sound with good earth shaking bass, which makes you experience pretty much what the soldiers did back in July 2 - 4, 1863. It was filmed partially on Gettysburg Battlefield, and the remaining portions filmed on surrounding farmlands in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Over 53,000 soldiers died during this battle.

Pretty interesting historical film
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm not big on military history despite having retired about a year ago from the military. However, if I see a movie that sparks my interest, I'll check it out. I purchased this DVD pretty cheaply with a Reward Zone certificate that I had and was not disappointed. Although I'm familiar with the story of Gettysburg, it's always interesting to see things like this brought to life in a film. The acting was pretty well done and the scenes were interesting enough to make this worth watching.

Great historical perspective on Civil War
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My husband and I have always been history buffs, esp WWII and the Civil War. We traveled to central Pennsylvania and the Gettysburg area as well as the Battlefield itself. Most of the movie was shot in the actual battle area so it is easy to put the movie into perspective. Great actor lineup and an excellent plot. Would recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates America and what it took to make it great.
