    Synopsis

    Grand Prix
There's a few million dollars' worth of star power and a nickel's worth of plot in the lavish race-car melodrama Grand Prix. Among the participants in this annual cross-continent competition are characters played by James Garner, Yves Montand, Brian Bedford, and Antonio Sabato. Interested parties include Toshiro Mifune (his voice dubbed by Paul Frees), Adolfo Celi, and Claude Dauphin, while the women who agonize on the sidelines include Eva Marie Saint, Jessica Walter, and Françoise Hardy. The racing sequences are top-rank, cleverly utilizing those 1960s devices of helicopter angles and multiple screens. Oscars went to editor Frederic Steinkamp (among others) and the sound-effects supervisor Franklin E. Milton. Filmed on location, Grand Prix made back its cost about half a week into its run. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

While this is a move about a historical period of GRand Prix racing (late 60's), director John Frankenheimer used ground breaking techniques to capture the racing action that remain unrivaled to this day, and in fact would be impossible to replicate today due to much more limited access and safety restrictions. The extras included are nearly as entertaining as the movie itself and give you an behind the scenes look at the extraordinary lengths Frankenheimer went to, to film the racing scenes in a way that conveys the speed and brutality of Grand Prix racing in a way never done before, or since.

I love this movie, it was done in a time when Hollywood could get access to the live events. Making a movie like this now would take a series of minor miracles and logistically speaking, it would be impossible. The film features a superb cast, great acting, great locations (Monte Carlo opening scene is a real attention grabber) and great cinematography. It is amazing that with all that comes in this DVD (bonus footage etc) the price is only $9.99.

This movie is for people who like 60's drama AND Formula One racing. Too many people look at this movie for just another drama. The sport is just as much a character as Pete Aaron, main character played by James Garner. If you don't like the sport or don't get it, then you will not enjoy this movie. If you do, then this is a must have.

Good movie. Not the best car movie and not the best racing movie, but a good solid movie and well worth the price at Best Buy.
