Synopsis

Grease
"Grease," said the poster and the Barry Gibb song, "is the word." Transferring its setting from Chicago to sunny California, and adding a dash of disco to the ersatz '50s score, producer Allan Carr and director Randal Kleiser turned this long-running Jim Jacobs-Warren Casey Broadway smash into the biggest blockbuster of 1978. 1950s teens Danny (John Travolta) and Australian transfer Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) spend their "Summer Nights" falling in love, but once fall comes, it's back to Rydell High and its cliques. As one of the bad-boy T-Birds, Danny has to act cool for best pal Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) and their leather-clad mates Sonny (Michael Tucci) and Doody (Barry Pearl, in the role Travolta played on-stage). Despite befriending Frenchy (Didi Conn), one of the rebel Pink Ladies, virginal Sandy is "too pure to be Pink," as the Ladies' leader, Rizzo (Stockard Channing), acidly observes. Declaring their devotion in such ballads as "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Sandy," Sandy and Danny split, reconcile, and split again amidst a pep rally, dances, drive-ins, and a drag race, before deciding "You're the One That I Want" at the climactic carnival. With Travolta white-hot from Saturday Night Fever (1977), Grease soundtrack singles climbed the charts and summer movie crowds poured in. With the presence of Joan Blondell, Eve Arden, Sid Caesar, Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, and Frankie Avalon appealing to grown-up memories, Grease became the highest-grossing film of 1978, the highest-grossing movie musical ever, and the third most popular film of the new blockbuster '70s after Star Wars (1977) and Jaws (1975). Its sequel, Grease 2, did not exactly set the world on fire in 1982. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

"GREASE" is the most successful movie musical ever created. The 1978 film was based on a musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey and eventually caught the attention in the early 70's of producer Allan Carr who purchase the rights to adapt the play into a film. With the popularity of "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" in 1977 which help boost the career of John Travolta, producer Robert Stigwood joined Allan Carr to create a film based on this play. Tapping director Randal Kleiser who worked with Travolta in the popular 1976 TV film "The Boy and his Bubble", recruiting "GREASE" musical choreographer Patricia Birch and hiring Director of Photography Bill Butler ("Jaws", "Stripes" and "Rocky II & III", etc.), this team would create a film that would become a musical ingrained into American pop culture. Despite no respect in supporting the film by the major film studios, "GREASE" would become the second highest grossing film in 1978 behind "Superman" bringing in $96 million in the box office, the "GREASE" soundtrack would achieve #1 status around the world during its release and the film received many award nominations. VIDEO & AUDIO: "GREASE" is featured in 1080p High Definition and I will tell you I was blown away by the picture quality. I've watched this film dozens of times, owned the VHS and both DVD versions and when I started watching the High Definition Blu-ray transfer, I was speechless. The many colors featured in the film were quite vibrant. This film is over 30-years-old and Paramount really did a great service in the transfer and remaster of this film. Closeups, outdoor scenes, you name it, the film looks spectacular!

Nostalgia and a reasonably good story

Grease earns one of my four stars just for its production/entertainment value and its role in reviving memories of what is now a historic era. Otherwise--especially with a view to the story--I would give it only three stars. The story is disjointed, and the motivation of many characters seems random. But after recently watching the stage version of Grease--which celebrates purposeless rebellion against all authority, just because--I began to see that the movie's creators at least made some effort to come up with real motivations for both of the lead characters in their ultimate decisions. I respect the movie versions of Danny and Sandra far more than the stage versions. Aside from that, both versions are full of fun throwbacks to the fifties.

I found the blu-ray of "Grease" in my local Best Buy for about $12 and couldn't resist buying it. Sure it's dated but it's always been one of guilty pleasures. Like most blu-ray movies, "Grease" benefits from the transfer. It's crisp and clean with great sound. It was, incidentally, the first time I'd ever seen it in wide screen. The Rydell High School Year Book packaging is cool enough to make the purchase even more worth it. The extras are pretty good too. Great value package.

I first saw "Grease" on HBO when I was about 8 or 9 years old and I've been a fan ever since! I've owned just about every version of this movie available for home video so it only makes sense to upgrade to this 4K UHD version. I'm impressed with the improvements in resolution and color! Even though the audio wasn't upgraded to Dolby Atmos, I believe it is a new remaster and it does sound better than the previous versions that I've owned.

This comes with the movie in three formats: blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. It's packaged in a clever yearbook-style case with a faux-leather cover. Only complaint at all (and only reason it doesn't get four stars) is that the digital copy is exclusive to Vudu instead of the the Google Store or Movies Anywhere. Otherwise, good stuff for a great price!

Seeing a movie like this so many years after it first came out reminded of why I liked it from the very first frame. The familiar boy meets girl tale is elevated to classic status due to the star appeal of its leads, the great casting of the supporting cast (particularly a long in the tooth Stockard Channing, but no one else could have played Rizzo), non-stop singing of beyond catchy songs, top-notch musical numbers, and even manages to sneak some old timers for fun. Good times.

Improvement over 1080p but don’t expect miracles!

First of all, the sound is EXCELLENT. Video is mixed. Sometimes razor sharp, other times a little soft. However, it’s a marked improvement over the 1080p and worth it for the sound alone, which is glorious. Supplements are solid. This is the best this movie has ever looked and sounded on home video, so if you’re a fan, it’s a must buy.

Bought this Blu-Ray 40th anniversary edition for a summer outdoor movie. It is perfect. With a good projector, a big screen, and a sound system, it just doesn’t get any better. The colors, the music, the cars, the costumes, Olivia Newton-John, and that Travolta fella... just perfect summer fun.
