Playing with musicians he's felt comfortable with for 5 decades, battling nerve damage in his wrist and hands, and a bout of excema that meant that slide guitar was his only option (less physically demanding, Eric, paired with the inimitable producer Glyn Johns, has created his best album in years! The self-penned "Spiral", not only has Eric playing masterful slide, but his vocals are a cry from the heart, an emotional plea to be able to continue creating with an almost divine inspirationYou can hear Eric's emotions catch in his throat, his gift almost heaven-sent, and "Eric is God", London graffiti from the '60's,is now a humble and grateful 70 year old who is quite simply amazed that he is still here!

    Clapton's Last?

Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton has given us a series of various interpretations of the blues he so dearly loves over the years - in recent times much of his solo output has been on the mellow side. And a fair amount of this album is also, though some of its tracks have more punch to them. But no matter how it sounds - and technically it is nearly perfect, being produced by the legendary Glyn Johns, who has worked on more classic rock monuments than just about anyone in the business - it is tinged with the sadness that Clapton is suffering a debilitating nerve condition that may force him to stop playing. This is a nice way to go if that's what it is.

I've been a fan of Eric Clapton for many years and was so happy to hear he was putting out something new, even if it may be for the last time. The highlight for me is the cover of Robert Johnson's "Stones in My Passway" as I am also a big fan of his music. Clapton may not have the fire that he used to, but this album is a great example of a mature artist looking back on his career and paying tribute to the kind of music he enjoys listening to. While I certainly hope this isn't his last album, if it is, he's going out with style!

I guess I am too tied into the Clapton of old, the swashbuclking Clapton with the Gibson Les Paul/SG and his Marshall stacks or with the Fender tobacco sunburst stratocaster and the Fender Champ amp playing under the pseudonym Derek... Instead I hear Clapton and imagine him wearing a Perry Como.... some songs are okay but his selection is boring to me. I know he is capable of better music. His acoustic blues is good.

Eric goes back to his blues roots on this CD. This is for people who really dig old style blues. He does not go for a lot of flashy guitar solos instead he plays it as it comes. He is a little more laid back than usual but it work for me. Rumor has it this may be his last studio recording although he is suppose to play on the next Rolling Stones blues oriented record.

Another almost easy listening compilation by EC. Like everything he touches, I Still Do is masterfully presented, but this album leaves me with little to get excited about. Though the music is presented with passion, the collection, for the most part, lacks heat, sparks and fire. If you like the easy, bluesy soft side of Clapton, this one's for you.

I love Eric, Cream is one of my fave groups of ever. But as a solo artists, most of the time he just goes through the motions. This is one of those times. Unless somebody big pushes him (like Winwood did on the MSG shows, great stuff), he usually just presents with predictable bland stuff. That is what this is.

We should all be thankful Eric is still productive. Teamed with Glyn Johns in the producer's chair, this is one of the best Clapton releases in years. A combination of originals and covers, the guitar still burns and the vocals are as good as ever. Only weakness is the material.
