I find the pen only useful for tasks that I would normally hand write. This means tasks like marking up a pdf or word document, taking notes during meetings, or annotating screenshots or photos. Some people say they use it for Windows operation (moving files, selecting things on the screen, games), but I find the pen more cumbersome for those. If you want to right click, you have to find the little button on the side, or wait a second after you contact the screen and it will eventually register as a right mouse click. Trying to grab a corner of a window and resize it takes extra patience. I find it better just to use the trackpad on the keyboard. I think the Apple Pen works better (smoother flow, better palm rejection), but then you have to use the whole Apple ecosystem. For those saying the Wacom Bamboo is better, I have one word for you: "eraser". Having the back end of the Microsoft Pen as an eraser is as natural as using a pencil to write notes. Yes you can program one of the buttons on the Wacom pen to erase, but then you have to find it on the side of the pen as you're writing/drawing. Overall a good pen. Only needed for specific uses, but the best solution if you want to takes notes, write on photos/screenshots.

I have owned both the Microsoft Surface Pen and Apple Pencil, and both are top of the line products. The Surface Pen's eraser function is amazing, I feel like I am writing with an actual pencil when I am in the middle of the lecture and taking notes. Along with the eraser function, the clicking options is clutch because I can seemingly, without any hassle, screenshot a page or document and it sends the screenshot straight into One Note and I am able to start taking notes. There are quite a few options that you can set your pen to which makes puts it ahead of the Apple Pencil in terms of functionality and customizing options. In comparison to the Apple Pencil, the Surface Pen does not respond as smoothly as the Apple Pencil, but not enough to make a difference. A big difference between the two would be the eraser function and clicker functions on the Surface Pen. A must if you have a Surface Go like myself!!

I bought this device for class and it is amazing!!! It is super responsive and supports full Microsoft programs and not just apps, has the full windows 10, and incredible battery life. Always had the device on the highest brightness and performance settings and lasted me most of the day. Was charging almost towards the end of the day. Great for media and content creation as well. The keyboard is awesome. Excellent key travel, well laid and responsive trackpad and every key has independent lighting. The pen is very responsive, fluid and is available in a variety of colors, also magnetic so can attach to the device without fear of losing it and has applications on almost every app and program. All in all excellent device, also very quiet and fabless Which makes it easier to use and does not overheat even with CPU and RAM intensive work. Would definitely recommend. Price is a bit on the high side but with Best Buy installments won’t be an issue.

Go for Bamboo ink if you want note taking

I used it for 10 days and exchanged it for a bamboo ink. This pen has its issues. READ THIS - Link has more details : https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpronew-surfdrivers/surface-pro-intermittent-pen-inaccuracy-when-hand/28ef8566-0003-4c68-a964-6c2562423eb0 If you want to use this for note taking then I would suggest to go for bamboo ink which is 30$ cheaper. I really liked the surface pen but it has its issues. For me it manifested in the form of a noticeable offset in accuracy around the corners of the screen while writing. Almost every other line, I had to erase the last 1 or 2 words near the edges of the screen on the OneNote app. Drove me NUTS! For note taking, I believe Ipad Pro + Apple pencil are the best hands down. However, if you want to stick to the windows ecosystem (like me) and you want to mainly take notes, then WAIT for Microsoft to FIX THE BUG with the tilt sensor in the new surface pens. Until then, you will be happy with the Bamboo ink.

This is the first Surface Pen I've bought, and I chose it specifically because I wanted an easy way to mark up documents and textbooks while using my new Surface Pro 2017. Unfortunately, the tablet no longer is sold with the pen - a huge knock on MSFT to start - but the benefits of spending the extra $99 on one are substantial. It's very responsive, extremely easy to use and makes for a helpful stand-in for a trackpad/mouse (an issue iPad Pro owners are all too familiar with). Unfortunately, there are some issues with my unit. The button at the top only intermittently works - immediately after pairing, it works perfectly, but then a week after I'll try to use it to pull up OneNote or take a screenshot and it does literally nothing. I'm not sure why this is - the battery is brand new. It's not a deal breaker for me as I rarely use the shortcut, but it is an important feature of the pen that I think should have been ironed out before it went on sale. Either way, I'm happy with my purchase and it really completes the Surface Pro set for me.

I didn't buy this pen when I bought my surface pro because the pen was so expensive and I didn't think I'd use it. After having my surface pro for about a month, I started to see how the pen could be handy. I mainly use it for playing games because some things are just easier with a pen than a mouse! My main concern, besides price, was how to keep from losing it. But, it is magnetic and sticks right to the side of your surface pro. I used a rewards certificate to bring the price down a bit, but I still think it was worth it. It does use a AAAA (yes, 4 As) battery. They are not as prevalent as AA or AAA, but Best Buy, Lowe's and Walgreen's carries them. I'm still on the battery that came with the pen so the battery life is good.

Like having it even though I have touch screen also. It has the fine point that is very helpful. two issues to make it a rate of 4 instead of a 5. there is no left click option and the right click is very difficult to find and use... should have been a different color and different tactil feeling to find and use. Have to actually look at the pen and find the narrow black lever and then press real hard to get it to click. Love the magnet attach to the side of the monitor-both sides and both directions are nice. Have to decide which side to keep it as I move the monitor with the left hand a lot and it would dislodge the Pen, so now it is kept on the right side.

This accessory isn't as crucial to the Surface experience as the keyboard cover. I'm actually disappointed that the pens no longer come as standard. And for some reason, every time I give it to someone to try, they end up holding down buttons while trying to draw, resulting in a poor experience for them, though when put in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing, it performs adequately for writing and drawing. If your primary reason for purchasing a Surface is to draw/take written notes, absolutely get this. If your primary reason is to check your facebook, maybe do some youtubing, and watch netflix, skip it.
