I purchased this weather radio to make sure we get all alerts about tornados, hail and all kind of crazy stuff going down in TX. The TV weather people cover a good amount of area and many times miss our immediate area. So, I thought we were set. The radio was set up for the county we live in. Well, since than we had a very bad storm with hail and heavy rain that flooded our backyard. It was so bad, the rain was going sideways and hail dropped of the size of golf balls. TV went out (satelite is not the smartest thing), so we couldn't get news of what was going on. I was sitting and staring at my newly set up weather radio to go off and told my family to get ready for shelter if need to be. Do you know when the alert came thru? 30 minutes after the storm, when we all sat down to watch a movie, freaked us out. I already have a handcrancking weather radio for less amount. It announces child abduction very well though. But for weather, would not recommend.

This radio is for one thing and one thing only....to alert you of emergencies...floods, storms, chemical spills, etc. It does this very well. The radio sets up quickly by hitting the menu key and then using the arrows to page thru the options...what kind of allerts do you want to be notified of (I picked all). When the national weather service sends out a warning you get a warning tone that could wake the dead and then the verbal warning....winter storm, tornadoe, etc. You can hit the paddle any time for weather forcasts also. The unit looks good, the sound is a bit like an old AM radio...you have six or seven channels to choose from and you pick the one that comes in the best...but if I had one improvement to suggest it would be a better speaker. For the price it is great.

This one replaced a very similar, older model, also by Midland, which had been knocked off the shelf one too many times. There are fancier weather alert radios out there, but this does all I need it to, I chose it over cheaper models because it has S.A.M.E., with which I can specify which county alerts we'll hear, thus saving alerts for counties that aren't likely to affect us. This newer model also allows choosing which kinds of alerts will sound, e.g. fire, avalanche, amber, blizzard, etc. I only wish there were alternatives to the loud siren, which startles me in a major way in daylight hours; but doubtless it will do the job in the middle of the night.

This little jewel can be set to only go off when the emergency conditions you choose arise in the counties you chose. You can make it sound an alarm or speak the warning in an odd but effective computer voice. Stick some batteries in it and it will continue to work when the power goes out. The volume can be adjusted so you can put it by your bed or in the middle of the house. And it's a great value too. I didn't hear it in my basement office with the door closed when it went off on the upstairs balcony, so it's not THAT loud, but everyone who wasn't in such a safe underground location heard it just fine.

The weather alert radio was very easy to program; set up was very easy and straightforward. However, with the backup battery installed, I had to walk the radio around the house until it picked up my local NOAA weather station. It does have a connection for an external antenna, but to me it seems unlikely that most folks would use such an item. Three days after setting up the radio, it received an alert and provided much needed extra time to prepare for coming strong thunderstorms and tornados.

I really like my weather radio we have had one for a number of years. Our last one we got after we had a fire in our house two years ago, It was working well but we had a bunch of new kittens and they began chewing on cords, after splicing the cord 3-4 times it was too short to splice any more and yet I could not keep batteries in it all the time. I tried to find a new cord for the old one and realized it was more cost effective to buy a new radio than cord which may or may not work. So now I have the new radio and it works quite well.

This radio is exactly what we wanted. We can program the counties we want alert for so we are no alerted in the middle of the night unless it is the counties we requested. We feel safer with the system!

Other than the annoying loudness of the warning alarm, this is a good weather radio. I live in a small condo. When the alarm goes off, it is deafening. They need to add a volume control to this radio!
