A fan of the first film, I no less was a bit trepidatious at blind-buying this Blu-ray. Having seen it, I can only assume that the naysayers didn't see or didn't understand the first film, as this met my expectations and then some. Those who "got" the first film, should know from that that the movie isn't about the monsters. While real - this isn't some disappointing dreamscape where the fantasy, alien, or supernatural element is a figment of some persons damaged psyche - the monsters are used as metaphor for a narative that's more profound than simple action or horror. New setting, new purpose, with a bigger budget. And the special effects and sound are blockbuster - you won't want to experience this on some wimpy tablet or cell phone via over-compressed streaming or download. Throw the BD up on the big screen (that's what high fidelity, high def is for!) with full blown surround and a powerful woofer. The sound alone is one of the more visceral I've heard lately and just makes the movie all the better. And the video easily holds up even projected at 100 inches. But if you have any expectations at all, I'd suggest you go in thinking "The Hurt Locker", rather than expecting some new twist on the likes of "The Mist". With expectations out of the way or the right expectations in place, you shouldn't be disappointed.

I was excited when the movie "Monsters" came out in 2010. I'd heard what a great movie it was..especially because if the tiny budget it was made on. Director Gareth Edwards hadn't done much up to that point, but he got some notoriety for his visionary work on this film. Of course, he went on the direct the blockbuster version of "Godzilla" in 2014, and he has a "Star wars" project in the works before making a sequel to "Godzilla" in 2017. Unfortunately, he didn't have a hand in making this sequel to "Monsters"..and it shows. The movie tends to be all over the place as far as character development and action sequences go. If the movie had just been a war movie....or just a movie with 200 foot monsters in it and soldiers battling them...then it might have been really cool. As is, though, it's a bit of a mess. Technically, though, the disc is superb. The audio and video quality is outstanding. If you saw this movie during it's limited theatrical run, you'll be very happy with this disc. If you didn't see the original "Monsters", though, this movie really won't make any sense. I'd have to rate this movie as something for fans only...but would give very good technical marks to the disc.

I had seen the original and gave this sequel a shot. Set in a world where monsters of all sizes roam the earth, this one was really more about a group of soldiers (4 friends from Detroit as the intro goes through) on their first tour of duty in the Mid East. At first it looked like it was going to be a monster hunting force. They ride in on a helicopter while jets drop bombs on a herd of the giant creatures, but then it changes tone to the eight special forces going on a mission to retrieve 4 lost soldiers. There is more about the impact of the US making as many enemies as they kill monsters. Indiscriminately often killing locals while trying to exterminate the alien creatures, the soldiers find themselves fighting the insurgent forces that want them out. If you want a commandos against the world kind of movie with a scifi environment, it would probably suit your needs.

It was hard giving this one a 3 star rating. Should have given it less. Disappointed in the film. It could have been a lot better. Action started out great, then fizzled out immediately. Film is rated "R" for language, violence and nudity. The single nude scene in the movie was totally unnecessary - it should have been cut out. Parts of this movie made no sense - bad continuity. Some good disturbing scenes. At first I thought this was just another Iraq/Afgan war movie with aliens in it. But realized later that this was a sequel movie to "Monsters" (2010). Bonus features on the bluray were almost non-existent. Only the Trailer and a "On the set feature" which lasted less than 5 minutes. The ending left you hanging, and will just lead into another sequel. The movie was still worth watching - but wait for it to hit the $7.99 bin.

As a fan of the original Monsters, I was looking forward to viewing this belated sequel. Let me tell you that I know that a movie is bad when I have to fast forward past some scenes in the hope I will get to ones that redeem the bad ones. Well, I had to fast forward a lot in this film and was glad when I had finally reached the end. Basically, the story mostly takes place in the Middle East with the US battling Muslim insurgents and in the background of the story, there are the monsters proliferating and from time to time they are the subject of awed looks by the US troops. The story is not engaging at all and I was sorry I spent money on this. I gave this 2 stars but it only deserves 1 1/2. 1 is for having the monsters in the movie, and the 1/2 is for a monsters scene toward the end of the film.

The only vocabulary in this movie was the f#wrd. It was used so much I couldn't follow what was trying to be said. The flashbacks were nothing but s#x, drug filled, and pointless. It was 20 minutes before an alien appeared. It was quickly disposed of while obscenities were yelled at each other. Yet another flashback began.....it was at this point I had to turn off the movie. It was such a disappointment from the first movie. Although the first movie was low budget; it had an interesting storyline. The flashbacks didn't interfere with the the flow it was an enjoyable movie.

Set in the terrorist battle zones of the Middle East, US soldiers not only have gigantic tentacled alien creatures to contend with, but other humans who don't seem to care about teaming up with the American soldiers and all of their prowess. So, who's the true enemy in this metaphoric rendition of the ever-prevailing human condition? A beautiful blonde to chaperone across the infested landscape is the last thing these comrads have to worry about in this occupied war zone gone even wilder and out-of-hand!

While I purchased this movie thinking it was your basic monster movie, it falls into a different category instead. This is a character study, where the situations men are put in make monsters of them. This resembles many Vietnam movies in this respect...but with monsters. In this case, the movies on Vietnam were better at this type of character study. I'll give the movie credit for the attempt but I will not praise it because it has been done better.
