SB-500 AF - perfect casual carry flash
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The perfect Nikon brand flash for hot-shoe equipped Z models such as Z fc. Small and lightweight but packing a reasonably powerful output which can be automatically metered through the camera circuitry. One of the only if not THE only dedicated flash for the Z fc model and it's now discontinued by Nikon as of this year in any case, so get one while stock remains.

Well-made Flash
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nikon SB-500 works so well with my Nikon D750 DSLR that I bought a second one for two-flash photo shoots. It is compact, well-made, and works flawlessly on the Nikon DSLR's hot shoe or off of the camera using Nikon's Commander mode. Battery life is much better than it was with a flash I had used in the past. The flash is full of features at a good price. I use it primarily as a fill flash with Nikon's 200-500mm lens for bird photography, and it seems to provide plenty of power for this use. Included are a well-made soft case and a tiny flash stand. The stand holds the flash upright while off the camera and I have successfully used it for product photography and for macro photography of mushrooms. Unless you need a more powerful flash, I highly recommend the SB-500. It is a high-quality flash that is easy to use and meets my flash photography needs well.

Learning to love flash photography
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this flash to use with my Nikon P7000. I never like the flash effects from the built in direct-on flash and always wanted a Speedlight for the camera - which I love. Very much a novice photographer but it didn't take me long to see the results of different approaches to using the flash. Small and light enough for use with the P7000 which is not a large camera. I would recommend this flash to anyone who finds they can't always shoot in natural light. I also considered the new, smaller SB-300 but read a number of reviews that convinced me the extra $ were worth it for the features of the SB-500. Based on my experiences so far, I would agree with this.

I love it
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this for my D750 camera and it changed my indoor pics 10x. I used to have horrible pics when my subjects stand in front of the window. Their face and everything thing indoors goes dark while everything outside is bright. Using this speed light to bounce the light off the ceiling or walls brings out details inside while maintaining proper exposure for outside. I rarely use the flash directly on my subjects and found "light bouncing" to be my favorite way of taking pictures. It also comes with a dedicated LED light for movie taking. Wonderful light for the price. I like mine and have nothing negative to say.

Great portable speedlight
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wonderful speedlight for when you travel, this is noticeably smaller and lighter vs. most standard speedlights, like the sb-600/700/800, and the best part is, it's pretty much just a powerful (minus the ability to zoom). Only requires two AA as well, which is also great since it means carrying less spare batteries too. Front LED video comes in handy more than I thought it would, used it successfully for still photos.

buy this instead!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.just bought this flash to replace my SB-400 flash, and i am one happy customer!! the head rotates to several different positions like a more professional flash would, without putting a huge dent in the wallet. definitely an improvement for a novice shooter with little funding!! buy this over the entry-level flash, and you'll be set for a LOT longer before needing new gear!! also as an added feature this flash can be used quite easily off-camera with the included stand!!

Useful and light
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works well and the small size makes it easy to add to your camera bag. Have not really tried the video light but like the concept. I have used it as a slave and it seems to work okay, but does not see the master (a SB700) as well as my SB700s do. If you just want a flash to use for fill it works great and is less expensive than the older SB700 and its easy to use. I would definitely recommend it. If you need a bit more than that you might want to take a look at the SB700.

Great Flash
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was going to go with the SB-300 at first but decided to go with the 500 after reading reviews and I must say I am glad I did. The LED lighting is great and the flash on this is more than enough for almost any setting. I've used in total blackout conditions as a test and it lights up the room like a 75 Watt lightbulb. More than enough flash for the average user and in some cases I would say even the pro user.

Q: QuestionIs this sb 500 compatible with a Nikon z 6
Asked by monte.
- A:Answer Yes, fully compatible with the z6/z7, you can even access the speedlight functions such as commander mode directly through the z6/z7 on screen menu interface. The weight of this speedlight is also more balanced on the z6/z7 bodies than larger speedlights, all in all a great combo in my opinion.
