An office manager (T.J. Miller) throws a wild Christmas party in the hope of finalizing a deal with a big-time client (Courtney B. Vance). If the party is unsuccessful and the client gets away, the manager's boss and older sister (Jennifer Aniston) will close the branch and lay off all of the employees. Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, and Kate McKinnon co-star in this holiday comedy directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck.~Daniel Gelb
Ok...Christmas movies can fall into one of two categories really:
1) Schmaltzy that makes us cry and believe in the magic of the season OR
2) Irreverent that through raunchy humor or scary horror makes FUN of the magic of the season
There IS room for both! I like tearing up and going awwwwww as much as the next fella but sometimes you just want to poke a few funny holes in mistletoe, ho ho ho and presents under the tree.
So...Office Christmas Party. It features:
a) Jennifer Anniston, who is pretty AND funny
b) Jason Bateman, who can be hilarious but is inconsistent
c) a Reindeer at the office
Those three things, along with quite a few other things (naked Xeroxing, rappelling down the side of a skyscraper, office sex, drinking, irreverence, more office sex, etc.) are all thrown into the proverbial blender and the "puree" button is hit.
IT's funny, but it also squanders its pretty amazing premise, cast and Reindeer because it's trying to do TOO much and rely TOO much on sex. An office Christmas party gone totally wrong could be comedy gold - this movie isn't it. But it COULD be. And that premise could be sliced and diced so many ways (Die Hard is an office christmas party gone wrong also...) but everyone here was content to accept a paycheck and show up (barely).
It's still funny...but it could have been SO MUCH more than it is.
That said, sometimes you don't want a masterpiece...you just want to make fun of fruitcake. And eggnog. And this movie does that. So...decide what you want. If you have had ENOUGH of the holidays and need a palate cleanser. This works. IF you want something that can be a true classic (even something like Christmas Vacation), keep looking...
When an overbearing CEO (Jennifer Aniston) decides to close her hard-partying brother's failing branch, he (T.J. Miller) and his fired up co-workers (Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Kate McKinnon) decide to throw an epic office party to land a big shot client and save everyone's jobs. Fueled by booze and bad decisions, things quickly spiral out-of-control in one of the craziest nights of their lives.
My wife and I usually spend Christmas Eve watching holiday movies, and this past year was the same. We loved this movie, its story line, and its cast. A ton of laughs, and great holiday spirits. We will for sure be watching this one again next holiday season.
This is a crazy Christmas movie that uses the holiday as an excuse to party their brains out in the office.
It is a break from the sappy holiday movies that is in line with the Hangover movies or Christmas vacation.
Jason Bateman and Jennifer Anniston star in this goofy film.
enjoy the bad reviews as much as the movie. People are saying things like "I wish there had been more of a story..." Yeah, because hip comedies, like their indie movies, NEED A STORY! Come on, people...it's about absurd office antics around the Christmas Holidays and how one lad and his team attempt to save the company and all the jobs therein. It is a typical "OFFICE" comedy (if you don't know the franchise, check up on that first) featuring typical Jason Bateman-style gags. Lots of adult and "bathroom" humor....lots of moments so stupid that they are HILARIOUS!
If you have never worked for a large corp or in a big office setting, you might not get the reasons BEHIND the GAGS. Especially the running HR gag. Human resource managers are just over-paid glorified clerks. They are there not to help employees, but to help the company control the employees. This is about the PARTY that Human Resources would never condone! It is IN the face of the HR clerks. And, having worked in similar environments, I LOVED IT! It is PARTY movie, so yeah, you will see many modern PARTY references. Hey, some of it is distasteful. That is the point. This is about OFFICE PARTY today...not about your grandma's office party! So grab some popcorn, beers, hot chicks...and enjoy this Office Christmas Party like you are there!!!! This was released in the 2016 Christmas movie season, so right now, it is kind of OUT OF SEASON...but I just watched it and found it funny, even in may.
