Out of Sight [Collector's Edition] [DVD] [1998]

Out of Sight is an experience in how to do a DVD right. Featuring a widescreen 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital Sound, this DVD has all of the major elements of a great disc. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Frank have a good rapport on the commentary track as they discuss the development of the project. Soderbergh also provides an invaluable guide to his thought process and inspiration by discussing his motivations behind the film's unusual editing and cinematography. The disc also features not a quick "making of" featurette, but rather an extensive behind-the-scenes look that is just as interesting as the commentary. Rounding out the list of major features is a deleted scenes reel. While it would have been nice to have them divided by a menu, the quality of the deleted scenes (including the trunk scene as Soderbergh originally envisioned it) makes sitting through the entire reel worthwhile. Also included are trailers and a menu devoted to the music in the film. Out of Sight is an essential disc for any collection and a benchmark for special edition DVDs.

    Out of Sight
Steven Soderbergh directed this crime caper adapted from the novel by Elmore Leonard. When ex-con Jack Foley (George Clooney) robs a bank, his car goes dead, and Foley lands in a Florida prison. His escape from prison doesn't go as planned, since it's witnessed by deputy federal marshal Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez). Foley's pal Buddy Bragg (Ving Rhames) intervenes, with the result that Sisco winds up in the trunk of the getaway car with Foley, and the two realize they're attracted to each other, despite being on opposite sides of the law. However, that doesn't stop Sisco from her mission to capture Foley, who has spent much of his life in prison. Flashbacks introduce Foley's fellow prisoners, including dim dude Glenn Michaels (Steve Zahn), violent Maurice "Snoopy" Miller (Don Cheadle), and insider trader and billionaire Richard Ripley (Albert Brooks), who talks too much about his wealth. This later leads to a break-in at Ripley's posh Detroit estate by Miller, his brother-in-law Kenneth (Isaiah Washington), and menacing White Boy Rob (Keith Loneker). While seeking a hidden safe, the group threatens Ripley's housekeeper Midge (Nancy Allen). Foley and Bragg are in on this operation, but they wind up outwitting the others, and Sisco is close on their trail. The film features uncredited cameos by Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson, and was shot in locations in Florida, Louisiana, and Michigan. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Well done version of a good plot.

If you enjoy George Clooney and/or Jennifer Lopez, you'll love this. Even if they're not your favs, the plot keeps you involved. George Clooney plays a bank robber & his partner is the wonderful Ving Rhames. Jennifer Lopez plays a police officer who's hot on his trail in more ways than one.

George Clooney was a bankrobber and Jennifer Lopez was a Federal Marshal who bends the law and is determined to make one last heist, Jennifer who chooses all the right moves and all the wrong guys. Variety hails out of sight ,sly, sexy, vastly entertaining film.

      Exceptionally Well Done

'Out of Sight' is an exceptionally well done film that's worth every minute of watching. Great performances, even by Jennifer Lopez, who I don't particularly care for as an actess. Highly recommended! Widescreen.

A fun film based on an Elmore Leonard novel with decent special features. A quick cameo of the Ray Nicolette character by Michael Keaton from the film "Jackie Brown" is very funny.
