Overall super amazing player, love the PQ and AQ!!
|Posted .Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.Features
Quality5 out of 5Value5 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5I felt compelled to write a review of this marvelous player. It blows away my previous player, the Sony X800. Though that is a very solid player, the PQ isn't as good and the sound isn't as good either, and no DV (dolby vision). The X800 has a better build quality with more metal but that's where it stops. After hooking up this player, I threw in Baby Driver, which the first chase scene with his red car looks and sounds reference. I've also watched The Office on blu-ray and the upscaling on this player is second to none. It upscales blu-rays and makes them really look close to 4K. Next we watched Prisoners and having seen this movie several times on blu-ray, it was easily the most detailed and crisp it has ever looked. The network streaming is also right on track. I have the Simpsons and Seinfeld ripped to my network hard drive (don't worry I own the discs) and both look great. Now it's standard definition but the network interface is nice and works just fine. I would recommend this to anyone willing to spend a little extra to get the best audio and picture quality for your 4K set. I have a TCL 55" that does DV and it just looks so sharp with this player. It also upscales beautifully. Highly recommended!!

One of the best UHD BR players
|Posted .It is one of the best BR players from Panasonic but, but have some issues for example: all movies in Netflix streaming are converted to Dolby Vision and this affects the original quality of the movie. If you have a decent AV receiver and good speakers then the sound and surround is amaizing.Super UHD TV+DPUB 820k+Surround System and you don't need to go out to the theater. Watching BR movies is also amaizing to almost 4k.

Best 4k blu ray player
|Posted .Picture is better than any 4k player I ever seen or purchased. It especially looks best on the the 4k blu-rays. But you have to play with the settings of the player for the collars to really come out. Once you get everything set up the way you like it looks excellent for reals. It's a real keeper for reals. I can not be happier for reals. Thanks for everything bestbuy.

Picture quality is great
|Posted .Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.Features
Quality2 out of 5Value3 out of 5Ease of Use5 out of 5Well I here everybody saying good things about this player so I bought it. And my Sony x800 player stopped working after 3 years. First thing the shipping was bad my box was beat up when I got it. So I'm not sure if thats why I had problems with it. I played 7 movies in it in 3 days. 2 movies locked up and I had to start it over and the one movie locked up 2 times. Then the last movie I played in it the sound cut out half way through the movie. So I decided to return it I had enough. I had them reorder a new one for me so I will see if I will have the same problem with the next one. If so then I guess I will try the high end sony. But the Sony doesn't like my anthem the well. I'm not sure what else to go to. I will say picture quality top notch. Functionality could use a little work for a higher end play to play disk better.

Main Unit Fine, Remote Almost Unusable
Posted .This 4k UHD Blu-ray player is fine except for the layout of the remote control. It absolutely defies one-handed operation. The layout places the most common keys back over the middle of your hand and the thumb can not bend in that direction. The solution is to hold the remote so close to the butt end that it is uncomfortable and easy to drop. Or use two hands. To heck with that! This seems like a petty complaint, but this is flat out the most uncomfortable remote I can remember ever using. It's bad enough that I am focusing my review on it. I imagine I will get used to holding this remote but, right now, it makes me upset.

Took a while but it grew on me
|Posted .Owned for 2 months when reviewed.Features
Quality5 out of 5Value4 out of 5Ease of Use4 out of 5Pros mentioned:DesignAt first I didnt really see much difference between this and my Sony x700. I mean, both do look amazing and I recommend that one if you dont wanna spend this much on a player. The best is that it auto switches to Dolby Vision. The x700 made you manually turn it on and off. Sometimes I couldnt find details on the disc packaging to let me know if it even had dolby vision. If it does, you wanna watch it that way. Of you dont care about DV or your tv doesnt have that feature it's no big deal to you. The UB820 has this awesome HDR button that allows you to brighten the HDR more if youd like. It has like 4 settings. Now, you're probably thinking that's something you can just adjust on your tv. It's not. I tried to do that and mimic thos feature bit no settings are the same and if they are it's way too many different adjustments compared to one button push. This HDR button also works on streaming 4k sites like Amazon and Netflix. You can also change the wallpaper on your homescreen which is cool. I have a Halloween one on mine right now. I do wish the image of the movie appeared when a disc was in. My Samsung player does that and I love it. Shows a picture or mini poster of the movie. The bad is really just that it doesnt have many apps. It's a shame too because I think it would make this player stand out more. I use the built in apps or firestick most of the time bit then I cant use the HDR button. Also I wish it had an input to run something else thru it. Great player and the price is a little higher than I'd normally go bit if you're ok with it you shouldn't be disappointed. And yes, I still do use that HD-DVD player in the picture.

Excellent stand alone player
|Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, PriceIf all you want is a stand alone blu-ray player this is the one to get. It handles HDR10, HDR10 Plus, Dolby Vision, and HLG. Most importantly it allows you tone map output just in case your TV is not able to accommodate the brightest highlights. (OLED, projector, and low level LCD). One of the most underrated things about this player is when it comes to HDR10 content sometimes it's too dark, possibly even below SDR standards. The Panasonic includes an "HDR Optimizer" which actually allows you to raise the brightness and adjust light/dark as necessary. Compared to my XBOX one S & X, absolutely prefer this as a player. The XBOX still has issues when it comes to playback varying on title, no Dolby Vision/HLG/HDR 10Plus support as of yet. Suggestion is to also look under "Buying Options" as it's easy to get an Open Box excellent from $350-430 depending on location. The players build quality is subpar though for the price and only issue hence 4 stars.

Q: QuestionDoes the unit play 4k mkv files or any mkv files at all off a USB drive?
Asked by Evildeals.
- A:Answer Yes, the UB820 will play 4K HDR MKVs from an external hard drive (It has to be plugged into the rear USB input) but it will not play any of the lossless audio tracks. These include DolbyTrue HD, DTSMA-HD and Dolby Atmos. It will play lossy audio tracks (Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 or DTS 5.1/7.1). The UB820 will also not recognize chapter marks in any MKV files. Despite these "shortcomings", as a pure disc player, the 820 now stands at the top of the mountain. I have a still brilliant Oppo-203 and from a pure video standpoint, the 820 now edges it out.

Q: QuestionI am wanting to get a stand alone 4k player and saw this model and the DP-UB900, what are the main differences between this and the 900? Is it better to buy the 900 over the 820 or vice versa? Thanks in advance.
Asked by Manuel512.
- A:Answer The 900 is an older model that has superior build quality. The upcoming (sometime in August) 820 has the newest picture processing and adds HDR+ (as well as Dolby Vision via a later date firmware update). In my opinion the 820 is a better bet. If you are someone that has a dedicated amp/pre-amp, high end speakers and do critical listening to music then perhaps the 900 (or better yet the upcoming 9000 may better suit you but if HDR+ takes off you would behind with the 900 and the 9000 has not even been announced for a US release yet).

Q: QuestionDoes this player switch automatically to Dolby Vision when a movie contains that format? Or do you have manually switch to that like the Sony 700?
Asked by Studog.
- A:Answer Yes. It will auto play a DV encoded disc in DV but only if you have DV turned ON in the player settings. If DV is set to OFF, it will play the disc in HDR.

Q: QuestionAs I look to the reviews, I see too many 5's ( as of 9/4/18)... I see one 4 rating. It seems the '5s are written from product managers and not the "Avg. Joe". Now why do I mention this? European ratings are 3's and 4's. Whats up? Who wants to buy a 3?
Asked by SanDiegoGuy.
- A:Answer I got this player a few weeks ago when I got a new LG C8 65" OLED tv. I love it. Its quiet, its fast, it works great. I'm not a product manager nor do I work for panasonic or LG. Nor anything in the industry.

Q: QuestionI currently have the Sony UBP-X700 due to it having the HDMI Audio Output. Does the Panasonic have this output?
Asked by BKRHINO.
- A:Answer Yes. The DP-UB820 has two HDMI outputs, one of which is for audio only.

- A:Answer The Dolby update was just released. And it supports Atmos out the box.

Q: QuestionWhat is the HDMI spec on the audio out? I'll be running the separate audio out to a Marantz 1.4 HDMI input. Will I be losing anything?
Asked by Harry.
- A:Answer I can't confirm whether the HDMI audio out is HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 but I can tell you that for audio only it doesn't matter. The UB820 will pass all audio formats out it's HDMI audio port. What you don't get out the HDMI audio port, if you use it as a second Audio/Video HDMI out, is 4K video, so most likely the audio HDMI out port is only HDMI 1.4. Since your Marantz is HDMI 1.4 it won't pass 4K video anyway so you're not missing anything in regards to your current equipment's capabilities. I'm currently using the UB820's Audio out HDMI to send audio only to a Marantz AV7005 pre-amp which only has HDMI 1.4 inputs as well. I connect the Video HDMI out directly to my TV for 4K HDR. I'm not ready to jump to Dobly Atmos sound so with this setup I get the full video benefit of 4K HDR video to my TV and get Dolby HD and DTS Master audio thru my Marantz. So, you're not "missing" anything because your Marantz will still process all the formats it's capable of.

Q: QuestionI have a LG B7 and I keep tv on expert bright 99 percent of the time. With this player if I set it to OLED and do all settings and play 4k disc or blu ray will the player adjust for best picture or will I have to change tv picture settings as well.
Asked by Dancer79.
- A:Answer You'll have to adjust the settings on the TV yourself. I can definitely recommend watching a setup video about the Pansasonic UB820 for a quick setup there is one out there and for your TV (I have the same one) go to rtings and they have specifics for how to properly adjust and calibrate your TV. As for HDR and Dolby Vision rtings recommends using I believe Technicolor expert for HDR, and Cinema Home? I can't remember off the top of my head for DV. Those settings are automatic anytime an HDR output is displayed and no need to tweak anything.
