Sounds a sensor may be caught. Even little flecks of torn paper can trigger the sensor. Turn the printer off (maybe unplug it, to be safe) and look into the printer from both the front and back. Thoroughly check the paper path. Use a flashlight if you can. When a paper jam occurs, paper will tear, and some bit might be the culprit. Good luck!

If you haven't done so already, you can try uninstalling the original printer software and re-installing it from the HP.com website thru its download center. Hope this helps.
