You are actually purchasing a 5 year warranty that overlaps with the manufacturer warranty. Your 5 year warranty will most likely end 5 years from the purchase date of your tv. The big trick and heist is the way warranty companies use the word "extended". You and I would assume that after the manufacturer warranty runs out, you will have an extension of 5 years. The fine print will tell you that this isn't true. The word "extended" can also mean that you are extended more coverage for a period of 5 years, with an overlap of coverage during the original manufacturer's warranty.

Our TV quit working in the first year and the geek squad did nothing and won't refund the warranty I paid extra for.

So you are paying for a 5 year warranty but getting 4. F best buy. I will by everything somewhere else now

So, if its a one year warranty, you have no Geek Squad for the first year. You do after the warranty expires and five years starts. You deal with the manufacturer directly. That's why you register your "new" or "excellent" condition TV right away. You have one year from date of purchase, if its still in warranty. So, if its a "New" TV its one year usually from the manufacturer. No matter if its 1 month or 2 years from the release date. If it is sold as new or excellent, the manufacturers warranty covers it for usually one year. Other open box conditions are from the date of release. So, if you buy an open box "Good" TV, its still under warranty if its less than a year from release date. It could have 2 months left and be in fair condition. They usually wouldn't sell something like that because it would still be under manufactures warranty. It would usually be missing manuals, remote, stand and/or othet accessories. It goes manufacturers warranty and then your plan kicks in. On a new TV, your plan would be 1 yr manufacturer's and 5 yrs protection. Of which, Best Buy would and should do nothing for the first year. Its the manufacturer's faulty product. (As long as you arent the blame. Usually, it's you.) You can add protection up to 14 days..I think..after purchase and return the protection plan within 30 days of purchase of plan.. Not TV. TVs have their own return policy times and offers.
