If you are going to replace a device with a gift card as your device is unrepairable, then just transfer the balance to the new machine. Once a protection plan is negated by an unrepairable device then it is no longer a valid plan, but you should be able to transfer it with a new device so long as it is purchased at the same place and time as when you surrender the old device
