“1 when I select the dvd or apple tv I get the receiver audio from the tv, the receiver does not have HDMI but is does have a optical output as well as the tv .if I use the optical will this solve my problem or could I cause damage to the equipment”

• Yes, the tv's optical audio is a output and is designed to used with the HDMI inputs on the tv or via 4-port switcher.The optical audio on the receiver is a input.Run a toslink cable from tv's optical output to your receiver's optical input and that will solve the problem

• You can use an optical audio cable to hook up your receiver to the TV. This should not cause any issues.
