“This monitor is replacing an old gateway which came with speakers I have an acer modem it doesn't have a slot for HDMI hookup how can I hear my speakers do I need to buy a new modem”

This monitor does not have built in speakers. If you are connecting to a laptop, you can use the laptop speakers for audio. If you are connecting to a PC, then you will need external speakers connected to the PC for audio.
