“Am I obligated to use the built in speakers or is there a way of turning them off on the monitor menu so that I can continue to use the Logitech speakers I currently have connected to the monitor I am planning on replacing? Thank you in advance..”

Yes of course rather than use HDMI audio use your audio out jack. Click the little volume icon by your clock, then the little down arrow and make sure it is not on HDMI audio
