The 3rd party that completes this verification allows for several pieces of information to be provided or several routes to verify, one being that you provide an email address ending in .edu and you they will email you a serial number or yet another code to get a serial number from Adobe, depending on OS. MacOS you'll get a serial number from the 3rd party verification service, Windows requires the code this service outputs after successful verification to be provided to Adobe and their site will output a serial number to be used for activation during installation.
