Since Adobe went to a cloud-based subscription service all software has to be registered to receive updates and use the cloud functionality. Student/teacher software has always needed to be registered to verify eligibility for special pricing. Adobe will walk you through the process of eliginility verification.

Yes you have to submit proof that you are a teacher or student...plus your student email and picture of your student ID. And the program is a pain. I suggest the monthly program.
