No, you cannot upgrade the ram in the Alienware M15/M17 R2/3/4 machines. 
The ram is soldered, so if you buy a 16Gig machine, you will not be able to upgrade yourself, or easily. Watch a review of the R3 machine on youtube from any mainstream reviewer.

THIS IS WRONG! 

DELL has some of the SHADIEST support out there, this is to make you spend more money.

They are such hagglers, and I am sorry, but always from outside US (India) too- it's not race, but aggressive commission jobs by a legit company toward poor communities.

OF COURSE you can upgrade your ram, it is designed as such. Storage and other parts too. Soldering chips is a no. 
Warranty will be fine, it is easy to do- avoid static and pop it in evenly, watch a video even for your specific laptop.

Yes, you could upgrade the RAM to 32 GB. The warranty upgrade has to be done via Dell technical support team. The memory upgrade on your own will void the warranty.
