When these speakers fail to have volume or do not play music, the Audio Chip has failed. It has been a common problem with many Altec Speakers. The chip is an easy replacement for any skilled tech person. If in is interested, I offer this service for a reasonable price. I will send instructions on disassembly and simply mail board to me.
