“When you power it off via the menu button (circle button which brings up back, Vol, Home, and Power options), how do you power it back on? Tapping on the screen doesn't wake it back up, I had to unplug and replug it back in to power it on.”

Set your motion sensor. Then you don't worry about turning the unit off or on. Go into settings > system settings > display and then go to motion sensor. Turn that on. This will let the frame work in wake mode or sleep mode.
