“If I connect this to a large external drive (say 2TB) it might have hundreds of programs. How do search for what I want? Is there some kind of guide or menu for the programs?”

I’m not sure if an external hard drive works the same as a thumb drive, but you can try using the DVR button on the remote to pull up the list of recordings. This is how I find recorded programs using the thumb drive plugged into the front of the DVR.

This is because the unit needs to write a specific section of the HD to FAT32 format for recording. That format would not allow you to fill up 2TB or much less of the storage.
