It works best with an outdoor antenna. But if you live close to the TV transmitter towers, you could try an indoor antenna and see if you get all the local stations. My outdoor antenna is on a 30 foot tower, so I can see stations about 40 miles away. If your Sony TV has a spare HDMI input port, you should buy an HDMI cable. Or you can use the included 3 wire RCA cable (video, left & right audio). There is also a Coax output that can provide RF Channel 3 output for people with the old analog TVs..
