I just pour it in with the clothes right on top before you turn it on. Also, the owners manual said something about using high impact or high density detergent, I can't find the book right now, but I've done 3 loads with my regular detergent and have had no problems. They did give me 2 free samples of "Tide 4 in 1 ultra oxi" detergent which I haven't used yet.
