Hi Court. This is a serious problem that I solved this morning. I don't know why Amana in its wisdom doesn't know that us hand washers of delicate things and wool sweaters need a spin-only cycle.

Here's what you do: With nothing in the washer, set the pointer to the "drain/spin" cycle and press the "START pause/UNLOCK LID" button. The "sensing fill" light will go on, but it soon gives up and turns off since there's no weight in the washer. The "final spin" light goes on. Press the START button to unlock the lid, open the lid, dump in your wet things, close the lid, press START again, et voila! After a thorough spin, the "cycle complete" light goes on, and there you are. I'm so happy this works!

To those who say "just use the drain/spin setting", that will cause it to refill with water, it might say drain/spin, but that isn't what it does.

Amana….get your act together. This spin only is essential. Thanks for the tip!! Anyone who thinks you just turn it to drain/spin is soooo wrong! It doesn’t work unless you go through the steps this kind person posted!! Thank you. Hopefully Amana will hire women to design their appliances in the future!!

If you put it on drain and spin when the washer is empty the auto fill will eventually go to spin only! Pause it and put wet stuff in and press start. It will drain and spin only!!!!
