There are apps that work with your echo and lighting systems. There are several different systems, so "how" it works varies by the product, Philips Hue lighting is what lives in our house, and the APPLE HOME software is the controller that ties in the Echo.. We also have a few TP-LINK sockets that work directly with the Echo using IFTT app. So we can control all the lighting (strip lights, bulbs) through the smart phone or simply tell Echo "Turn on the ... TV lights... Bathroom lights, etc etc.

There is a Smart Home option in the Alexa app which will help recognize what systems you have installed in your house. Amazon's site will provide up to date information on what manufacturers Smart products are compatible.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It will work directly with certain brands of wall switches or light switches. Such as Belkin WeMo or TP-link switches. There are others that require an additional hub to work with echo (ie. GE, Lutron switches). You will need to do some research on the switches to know if they work directly with the Echo.
