“Can I have a Dot without an Echo or do I need both. I have an Echo and love it. Was thinking of getting my son a Dot for his apartment but don't want to get it if it needs an Echo to work.”

Echo dot is stand alone, you don't need another echo device
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The DOT works great and it works independent of the ECHO... or you can connect them together.. it's up to you. The DOT also works flawlessly with my iPhone and BOSE Speakers....... Great Gift :-)
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No you don't need an Echo, the Dot will work fine but the sound quality won't be very good if you play music unless you pair it with a Bluetooth speaker.
