• No apps are needed to be purchased with the Echo product line..... you just download them from the Alexa app- all are free!

• It's plenty useful and fun right out of the box. I haven't even explored it's options yet. I told it to play my favorite radio station and it automatically did so through "TuneIn" which I presume is an ap. I also ask it questions rather than reaching for my tablet to google something.

• Out of the box, it's already quite capable. For the apps, or "skills", I've had installed via the Alexa phone app, I haven't had to pay for any of them.

• I set one up for my parents and did not have to purchase any type of app. You have to download a free app to setup the connection but it is free.
