You can use it either to control you TV with voice commands or act as an external audio speaker. Most major brands have built-in Alexa compatibility. You just need to download your TV brand's specific "smart skill" (For example Samsung had "smartThings", LG is "ThinQ") inside your smartphone's Alexa app. This will allow you to say "Alexa, turn on the living room TV" for example.
