Hello Troy! Usually the boxes come with a sticker on the corner of the box saying that it's 2nd Generation model. The easiest way to tell at first glance from the image on the front of the box is the 1st generation will have a round front facing camera on the device while the 2nd generation will have a rectangular opening for the camera since it is equipped with an auto framing feature that the 1st generation does not.
