Hey Joan, while Amazon Prime does cost something depending on which plan you choose (monthly or yearly plan), it is not required for Fire tablets to function. The credit card information is being requested so if you decided to purchase content (books, movies, games, etc.) you don't have to repeatedly enter your information and should save you time.
