No you do not need an amazon prime channel or account to watch things. You don't even need wifi. This tablet offers many options of use including offline games made downloadable to the device that's great from traveling in the car with out wifi. Free mini videos from favorite characters and interactive books. You do need some sort of amazon log in or start a free account with the tablet just like when you buy a new phone or computer and allows you to recieve email updates.

All you need to have to register the device and get it up and running is a free Amazon.com Account.
