Hello Sue! And thank you for your question regarding the Fire HD 8 tablet. This device is a fully backlit tablet that works similarly to the screen on a smart phone. You would be able to adjust the brightness settings to be able to view it in an outdoors setting. As for reading it on a beach, it is not a water resistant device and you would want to be extra careful with the charging port so take extra care and precautions before doing so but you should be able to see the screen if you adjust the brightness in the Settings.
