• There is a kids and young adults profile when you set it up which tailors the selection of apps to the age group. You can also use the tablet in the regular adult mode just like a non-kids tablet. I use it myself for email, facebook, youtube etc.

• it is a fire tablet with a heavy duty padding around the outside. you can skip the padding and get a fire for less unless your child drops things alot

• It would be great for that age. You can remove the foam bumper for older kids, and it's essentially just a normal 7" Kindle Fire at that point.
