Do I need a smart tv to use the fire stick null

No. This is an “add-on” smart device. You need wifi and a tv that can accept an hdmi input.

Hello Jd, Thank you for your question. No, you don't need a smart TV to use the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. As long as your TV has an HDMI port, you can use your fire stick. Hope this helps, have a nice day!
