There is not a DVR function but there really isn't a need as all shows are at your fingertips. As far as the disconnecting Directtv question all you have to do is select which input you want to use with your remote. Pretty easy to use and no disconnecting needed.

You do not need to disconnect your cable to use the firestick. You need to use one of your HDMI plug located in the back of your tv.
