My experience has been that it will only respond to the device/remote that it was packaged with.

each remote is paired to the fire stick it came with and only works with that device

No, Alexa is loaded into the voice control of the remote, but I was not able to get my Echo Dot to function as a remote controller. It may be possible to do, but it does seem redundant except that you don't have to push a microphone button for the Echo Dot to hear you.

You shouldn't need the remote. Those are controlled by voice.
