A:AnswerYou can either find a replacement on amazon or eBay and program it to your stick... as far as the app remote your phone/tablet has to be connected to the same network but you will neeed the remote tho

A smart TV is not required for the Fire Stick. I use one with a basic computer monitor with an HDMI input.
In fact, I think it's better to not have a smart TV over time, as I suspect that upgrading a USB stick will be easier and cheaper.
