Hello! It depends on which version they purchased. The Kindle Paperwhite (16 GB) is sold in two options: Yes, ads appear on the lockscreen when the device is asleep. A small banner ad also appears at the bottom of the home screen. Ads are typically for books, Kindle Unlimited, and Amazon products. Ads do NOT appear while actively reading. This version costs $20 less than the ad-free version. No ads anywhere — clean lockscreen and home screen. Costs $20 more. The customer can check by going to Settings > Device Options on their Kindle.
