“Is the screen "smudges" at the bottom a defect? I see "smudges" at the bottom of the screen -- dark spots from the light not quite hitting evenly. This was a problem of the original Paperwhite and was fixed with Paperwhite 2nd gen. The problem's back with my 3rd gen. Should I just live with it, or is this a defect for which I should get a replacement?”

• The LED "shadows" are not unusual and can be minimized not eliminated by adjusting the light intensity. After using the read for a while It becomes less bothersome.

• The dark spots you refer to are there, although certainly not as noticeable as the 1st gen. Paperwhite. Return it only if it bothers you too much.. but I think if the book you're reading is interesting enough, this issue will fade into the background.

• I see this problem too-when reading in low light. I took it back to Best Buy, but the guy I talked to couldn't see what I was talking about. I guess I don't really know the answer to your question, but I just decided to live with it.
