Yes, it will store a LOT of books for off-line reading. Any books you bought with your Kindle account should still be available to you. I'd call Amazon about that. If you use the same user account on a new Kindle all those books should show up in your library for downloading.

Once the books are downloaded to the device, you no longer need to be connected to WI-FI in order to read your books.
