There is not a monthly fee for the Kindle itself. You purchase books and other items to load. Local libraries do have some e-books available. There are some sites for free books. If you're Amazon Prime there are low to no-cost books available every month. As I understand you pay extra one-time fee for not having ads. I have Signature Edition so don't have ads.

There are premium services available through services such as Kindle Unlimited and Audible which add additional benefits and options but they are not mandatory to use this device.
