The Alexa app communicates with the IoT device through the internet. As long as your smart phone and the Smart Plug both have internet access you should be able to command the Smart Plug from nearly anywhere in the world.

Please try again later.I currently utilize 4 Amazon Smart Plugs and I am able to turn each on and off utilizing the Alexa App. I have been able to turn each on and off via the App while at home and while away from home. I’m also able to turn each on and off via my Amazon Echo Dot (3rd generation).
