Hello, Kim! The Amazon Smart Thermostat would need internet in order to go through the set up process. If you lose internet for some reason after set up, the thermostat can work without internet. However, without being connected to the internet, you would not be able to control the device with your voice through your smart devices or through the Alexa app. It will work like a standard thermostat at that point, and you will have to change the temperature or controls on the actual device. There are buttons you touch on the front of the thermostat to change temperature or control settings. I hope this helps. Have a great day!

The thermostat itself has 3 soft-touch response buttons (one always lit in center for selecting/cycling through modes, and the other two (up/down) light up when setting the temperature. The 3 buttons each have a single raised dot (think braille dots) that’s easily located and lights up immediately for manual function if you don’t want to use your phone to adjust the thermostat.
