Do you need a Service plan with this unit null

The Amber tracking device prices posted on Best Buy include a service plan/software subscription which grants access to both the mobile app (iOS, Android) and the companion desk top web app. You will need to renew the service plan/subscription only at the one-year anniversary of your purchase. The subscription renewal price is $95 per year and can be renewed through the app using your credit card.

Not for the first year, when you purchase the device.

When I took GPS tracker to GEEK Squad, they were not able to help. Not familiar with product. They sent me to cell phone department and they were not able to replace bad SIM card that Amber Connect diagnosed. So, what good is a service plan!
