You have it run it a few times and then clean it with white vinegar and then run it again to get rid of the vinegar. Otherwise you clean it the same way once a month if you are a heavy drinking of coffee.

The directions are comprehensive and explain in detail how to sterilize the unit before using. I followed the directions and was satisfied with the results. You can clean the coffee filter separate if you like. The unit came packed nicely and had no visible foreign matter that shouldn't be there.
